Thanksgiving Planning Checklist: A Stress-Free Timeline

Thanksgiving planning checklist in a notebook on a kitchen table with pumpkins and autumn leaves

Every year it happens the same way. Thanksgiving feels far away, and then suddenly it is Tuesday, the turkey is still frozen, and nobody remembered to buy the cranberries.

Hosting Thanksgiving is not hard because any single task is difficult. It is hard because there are dozens of small tasks, spread across three weeks and several people, and most of them only live in your head.

This checklist fixes that. It breaks the holiday into a simple timeline, so you always know what to do this week and nothing gets left for Wednesday night. Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26 this year, so now is the perfect time to start.

How to Plan Thanksgiving: The Short Version

The easiest way to plan Thanksgiving is to work backwards from Thursday: lock in guests and menu three weeks out, order and shop in the weeks after, thaw and prep in the final days, and share every task on one list everyone can see.

Here is what that looks like week by week.

Your Thanksgiving Planning Timeline

3 Weeks Before: Guests, Menu and Who Brings What

  • Confirm your guest list and ask about allergies or dietary needs.

  • Plan the menu. Decide what you will cook and what guests can bring.

  • Assign dishes now, not the week before, so nobody shows up with a third green bean casserole.

  • Check your table, chairs, plates and serving dishes. Note anything you need to borrow or buy.

2 Weeks Before: Order, Borrow and Book

  • Order your turkey, especially if you want a fresh or specialty bird. Plan for about 1 to 1.5 pounds per person.

  • Borrow or buy missing equipment like a roasting pan, meat thermometer or extra chairs.

  • Write your full shopping list and split it into non-perishables and fresh items.

  • Pick recipes and save them somewhere easy to find on the day.

1 Week Before: Shop the Non-Perishables and Make a Cooking Plan

  • Buy everything that keeps: canned goods, baking supplies, spices, drinks and paper goods.

  • Write a cooking schedule for Thursday. Work backwards from the time you want to eat.

  • Clear out space in the fridge. You will need more than you think.

  • Do a first round of cleaning in the rooms guests will use.

The Weekend Before: Thaw the Turkey

  • If your turkey is frozen, move it to the fridge. The USDA recommends about 24 hours of thawing for every 4 to 5 pounds, so a 20-pound bird needs four to five days.

  • Confirm arrival times with your guests.

2 Days Before: Shop Fresh and Start Prepping

  • Buy fresh produce, dairy and bread.

  • Make anything that keeps well: cranberry sauce, pie dough and stock.

  • Chop onions, celery and other vegetables and store them in the fridge.

The Day Before: Bake, Set Up and Rest

  • Bake pies and make any make-ahead sides.

  • Set the table and lay out serving dishes with a sticky note for what goes in each one.

  • Do a final run through your cooking schedule. Then stop and get some sleep.

Thanksgiving Day

  • Follow your cooking schedule and let the turkey rest before carving.

  • Hand off small jobs to guests who ask how they can help. A list makes this easy.

  • Enjoy the meal. The planning is done.

The Day After

  • Store leftovers within two hours of serving.

  • Return borrowed items.

  • Write down what worked and what you would change. Next year’s you will thank you.

How to Set Up Your Thanksgiving List in Superlist

A checklist only works if everyone can see it. When the plan lives in one person’s head, that person ends up doing everything. Here is a simple setup that spreads the work.

Create one shared list. Call it “Thanksgiving 2026” and share it with everyone involved in hosting. Partners, parents, siblings, roommates. Everyone sees the same plan, and changes show up for everyone instantly.

Add sublists for each part of the plan. Use sublists for Menu, Shopping, Cooking Schedule and Guests. It keeps a long list easy to scan, the same way you would plan a home renovation or a trip with friends.

Assign tasks to people. “Bring rolls” assigned to your brother is a plan. “Someone should get rolls” is a hope. Assigned tasks show up in that person’s own task view, so nobody can say they did not know.

Give the timing-critical tasks a due date and reminder. “Move turkey to fridge” is the one task you cannot be late on. Add a due date and a reminder, and Superlist will tell you when it is time.

Keep recipes and notes next to the tasks. Paste the recipe link, oven temperature and timing into the notes of each cooking task. On the day, everything you need is in one place.

Capture ideas the moment they come up. Remember you need more napkins while standing in the kitchen? Say it out loud with Talk and it lands on the list. No more scribbled notes that disappear.

Once the holiday is over, keep the list. Next November, most of the work is already done. The same approach works for the rest of the season too. December is the month of lists for a reason.

Common Thanksgiving Planning Mistakes

Starting too late. Most stress comes from tasks that pile up in the final 48 hours. Spreading them over three weeks makes each week feel light.

Forgetting the thaw. A frozen turkey on Wednesday is the classic Thanksgiving emergency. Put it on the list with a reminder.

Doing everything yourself. Guests are usually happy to help. They just need to know what to do. A shared list with assigned tasks turns “Can I help?” into a real answer.

Planning only the food. Chairs, fridge space, serving dishes and parking are easy to forget. Give them their own sublist.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I start planning Thanksgiving?

Three weeks is a comfortable lead time. It gives you room to confirm guests, order a turkey and spread the shopping and prep over several weekends.

How much turkey do I need per person?

Plan for about 1 to 1.5 pounds of whole turkey per person. Go toward the higher end if you want leftovers.

How long does it take to thaw a turkey in the fridge?

According to the USDA, allow about 24 hours for every 4 to 5 pounds. A 16-pound turkey needs around four days, and a 20-pound turkey needs four to five.

What Thanksgiving dishes can I make ahead?

Cranberry sauce, pie dough, pies, stock and many casseroles can be made one or two days ahead. Chopped vegetables also keep well in the fridge overnight.

Make This Year the Calm One

Thanksgiving does not need to end with you exhausted in the kitchen. Start the list today, share it with your family, and let the timeline carry the load. If you want to bring the same calm to the rest of your life, it starts the same way: one list at a time.

Happy planning, and happy Thanksgiving.

What I love the most is that the app isn’t overloaded — it has exactly what’s needed, and it does it perfectly. I downloaded this app at the start of 2025 and it was immediately great - though It had a few flaws as was to be expected from a startup. Over the last 3 months or so it has become absolutely amazing!! It is now a key part of my daily routine and is super easy to use on all my devices and the new features that are being added (seemingly monthly) are incredibly helpful in managing my life and businesses. • I have tried a ton of to-dos and notes apps and, despite not being the most feature rich, its the one that has worked the best. There's power in simple but flexible system. It's the equivalent of having a pen and paper, with a dedicated space to sort out your task accross your notes. When comes the time to complete a task: open it, braindump the process. Need to break it down even more, just make a new task inside that task, and open it up. The seamless fusion of notes and task is its greatest strength.
